When submitting a piece of furniture for online evaluation it would be most helpful if you could provide. We need:
1) Provenance:
The item's history and where you obtained it from.
2) Measurements/dimensions in either inches or centimeters.
3) Digital
photographs giving the front and side view, and if possible the back view.
Further helpful information: You do not
have to answer any or all of the following but as with all on-line evaluations, appraisals, the more information that you provide,
the more accurate our online evaluation, appraisal will be:
4) What is the furniture made of (if you know), and if wood, the type
of wood (if you know), as it is often hard to see the grain in a photo. If it is wood, can you tell if it is a veneer or solid. If
it is a veneer can you tell its approx. thickness (i.e., 1/16th").See/click on "woods" for some discussion of commonly used woods.
5)
Condition, whether or not it has been refinished or reupholstered, and is there any damage that cannot be readily seen in the online
photographs.
6) If the piece has drawers, can you describe how are the drawers constructed. For examples click on "Drawers". Can
you include a picture? Is the bottom of the drawer plywood or solid wood. Again if not sure how to describe please include a picture.
7) Many large pieces of furniture do separate into sections. How many and how do they divide up.
8) Does the piece have nails
or screws. If so, do you know what type? Do they look original? Nails: rosehead, flathead (square), modern. Types of screws
by head: Robinson (square), Phillips (star), Flat. If no nails or screws, how is it build/fastened, i.e. mortise and tenon? Perhaps
include a closeup picture of screws or nails (note imatation nails of antique nails can be brought today so the fact that it has a
particular type of nail does not guarantee authenticity.
9) Does the piece have ornate carvings. If yes, are they
applied (nailed or glued on) or carved into the wood? Can you include a picture?
10) Have there been any other modifications.
I.e. the removal of the original horsehair stuffing of a Victorian settee.
11) Any information that you can
think of.
12) If you have a set of furniture, such as a matching living room, bedroom or dinning set please go to: furniture
sets
As with all on-line evaluations, appraisals, the more of the above informations that you provide, the more accurate
our online evaluation, appraisal will be.
